个人简介
I am a materials scientist working for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), based at the Culham Science Centre in Oxfordshire. My current position is leading UKAEA's neutron shielding materials development, with a focus on tungsten carbide and tungsten borides. My work entails characterisation, testing, understanding, and developing non-metallic shielding materials for use in future nuclear fusion environments, such as the UK's Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP). My primary expertise is in radiation damage and materials characterisation, using a range of techniques such as scanning and/or transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, micromechanical testing, and ion irradiation.
Before joining the UKAEA, I completed a PhD at the University of Manchester, based in the Department of Materials and funded by the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in the Science & Technology of Fusion Energy (Fusion CDT). My thesis project, supervised by Prof. Sarah Haigh and Dr. Philipp Frankel, was ‘Developing new MAX phase ceramics for nuclear fusion’. I designed, synthesised, characterised, and tested new MAX phase ceramics using a combination of density functional theory, pressure-less sintering, XRD, SEM, TEM, thermal analysis techniques, micro-indentation, high resolution digital image correlation, and proton irradiation. This was performed to assess their suitability as plasma facing component materials in a future fusion reactor environments.
Before my PhD, I completed an undergraduate degree in Physics at the University of Leeds, pursuing everything from quantum mechanics to cosmology, and finishing with an experimental project on permanent magnets in particle accelerators. The degree also gave me the opportunity to undertake a year in industry, which I spent working for two separate research engineering companies: The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry and TWI Ltd in Cambridge. Both are specialists in bespoke manufacturing technologies and industrial materials testing. I was engaged with projects relating to power beam processing, with a focus on high power electron beam technologies, such as cutting and welding.
