During my MSc and PhD I performed studies on the role of cyclooxygenase-2 and prostaglandin E2 signaling in the seizures induced by pentylenetetrazol, by using electroencephalographical, pharmacological and neurochemical methods. The main conclusion of these studies was that cyclooxigenase-2 and prostaglandin E2 facilitate pentylenetetrazol-induced seizures, and that the molecular mechanism underlying such effects involves prostaglandin EP receptors, which ultimately decrease Na+,K+-ATPase activity by causing enzyme phosphorylation.
Part of my PhD research was developed under the supervision of Dr. Emilio Rafael Garrido-Sanabria in the University of Texas at Brownsville, where I learned the pilocarpine model of epilepsy and received training in several electrophysiological and molecular biology methods.
Currently I hold a permanent position as a professor at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. In my lab we are focusing on the pilocarpine model of epilepsy as a tool to investigate basic mechanisms in epilepsy and related comorbities. To this purpose, at present I am performing several behavioral tests in pilocarpine-epileptic C57BL/6 mice and analyzing the expression and function of selected receptors and transporters in these subjects.
