He is now heading the group “Aerosols and Clouds” which is focused on the investigation of aerosol, clouds, and aerosol-cloud interactions from observations with sensors on polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites.

In his research, Matthias uses data from active and passive remote-sensing instruments to study (i) the optical and microphysical properties of aerosol particles, (ii) tropospheric and polar stratospheric clouds, and (iii) anthropogenic effects on clouds.
