Career Trajectory
Bio
My research training has spanned applied clinical science, molecular and cellular endocrinology, epidemiology and population health with substantive interests in disorders of the endocrine system and nutrient metabolism that affect the composition of the human body and its functional capacity, particularly in the context of ageing. I have made significant contributions to knowledge in the field of age-related changes in the male hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis and its relationship to body composition change, abdominal obesity, loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, glycaemic regulation, pro-inflammatory cytokines, frailty and ageing-related disability.
Midway through my caeer I sought to apply a greater proportion of my research commitment to health promotion in rural and remote populations to combat the endocrine and nutritional disorders that are largely a result of accumulated lifestyle risk. This included working with organisations (remote mining and manufacturing workplaces) and health care service providers (The Royal Flying Doctor Service) to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion and chronic disease management strategies in these contexts. Through this work I developed methodological capabilities using the Precede-Proceed Model of health promotion planning, implementation and evaluation and multiple baseline interrupted time-series designs to analyse population health interventions including the implementation of new and innovative services.
At this later stage of my career I am interested in collaborating in work to improve health care system and services design, planning and management.
