Dopamine dysfunction underlying psychosis is one of the most serious problems in treatment of mental illness. This is linked to excess striatal dopamine. We are currently studying the basal ganglia to examine the full network underlying possible dopamine dysfunction. This requires full neuropathological review of the ganglia, examination of receptor distribution and genetic and epigenetic sequencing of neurotransmitter and receptor genes to construct a full systems model of ganglia dysfunction.
