Matthew M. Hanks, PhD, ATC is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Hanks' research aims to determine the role of exercise on shoulder development and biomechanics and how these changes may prevent or delay the onset of pain and overuse injury risk in pediatric and adult manual wheelchair users. Dr. Hanks has published seven peer-reviewed manuscripts and more than 25 conference proceedings and abstracts to professional scientific meetings. Dr. Hanks was the recipient of the 2022 Vogel Award from the American Spinal Injury Association for the "Best Paper in Pediatric Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation." He is a member of the American Society of Biomechanics, American Spinal Injury Association, Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America, and National Athletic Trainers' Association. Dr. Hanks serves as a peer reviewer for clinical and scientific journals such as the Journal of Applied Biomechanics, Topics in Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation, Disability Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology, and Journal of Athletic Training. He also possesses more than 10 years of clinical and sports medicine experience working with youth, collegiate, and Paralympic athletes.
