Matteo Pierno is Associate Professor at the Department of Physics and Astronomy 'Galileo Galilei' of the University of Padua (Italy).
CV (chronological)
MP obtained the MS degree in Physics at the University of Milan in 1999 (110/110 cum laude) with a thesis on the pair-particles interactions of proteins near the crystallization. From 2000 to 2004 he has been working on the PhD at the Polytechnic of Milan (Italy) dealing with structural and dynamical properties of fluorinated sols and films.
In 2004 MP has been Fellowship at the CSGI, theNational Consortium for Colloids Interfaces Science, in the Unit of Milan-Polytechnic (Italy). Working on a project funded by the national oil company (Eni) on light scattering from paraffin gels he participated to the development of a CCD-based light scattering apparatus suitable for low and mid-low angles measurements.
From 2004 to 2006 he was Marie Curie Post-Doc in Montpellier (France) within the frame of the Research and Training Network on the Dynamical Arrested State of Soft Matter and Colloids (http://cordis.europa.eu/projects/rcn/73475_en.html). In 2006 he got a Marie Curie European Reintegration Grant (MCERG) for a project (Biosoft) on the self-assembly of DNA functionalized surfactants: within this frame he joined back the Unit of Milan-Polytechnic of CSGI.
In 2007 he joined Department of Physics and Astronomy of Padua University, where he carried on research activities in surface physics dealing with microfluidics, nanofriction, wetting.
SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS
Research interests are focused on complex fluids, liquids at interfaces and oscillators as probes of nanofriction and energy dissipation at the microscopic level in atomistic mono- and multi-layers. Along his investigations light scattering and optical microscopy techniques have been extensively used. The addressed specific topics may be grouped in two main areas: i) the study of the structural properties, the microscopic dynamics, and the phase transitions in soft condensed matter systems, and ii) surface and interfaces properties of liquid/liquid/ solid/liquid and gas/solid interfaces.
They include:
a) Aggregation in complex fluids: association, self-assembly and crystallization of colloids, surfactants and biopolymers
b) Slow and Heterogeneous dynamics: Spatial correlation and spatial cooperativity in soft glassy systems
c) Microfluidics: microfabrication of microfluidic devices and visualization of flow and contact lines motion
d) Energy dissipation: Microscopic measure of friction (nanofriction and nanotribology)
The scientific production is characterized by about 1000 citations and includes high impact international reviews (Science, Nature, Phys. Rev. Lett, Langmuir).

a) Optical methods: (Multi)speckle light scattering: correlation spectroscopy, CCD based scattering, Optical microscopy, micro-Particles Image Velocimetry (micro-PIV)
c) Micro-fabrication: soft lithography for microfluidics
d) Oscillators: microbalances for nano tribology and adsorption
MP teaches experimental physics for Bachelor and Master degree students at the University of Padova (Italy)
