Bio
Masafumi Kimata received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electronic engineering from Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan, in 1974 and 1976, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from the Faculty of Engineering Science, Osaka University, Suita, Japan, in 1992.
In 1976, he joined Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, where he was involved in research and development of silicon-based infrared focal plane arrays, including Schottky-barrier cooled infrared focal plane arrays and silicon-on-insulator diode uncooled focal plane arrays. In 2004, he retired from Mistubishi Electric Corporation. He is currently a Professor at Ritsumeikan University, Kusatsu, Japan, where he continues his research on microelectromechanical-system-based uncooled infrared focal plane arrays.
Dr. Kimata was awarded the Prime Minister Prize of the Japan National Invention Awards in 1993 for the invention of high-resolution Schottky-barrier infrared focal plane arrays. He is a Fellow of SPIE and a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, Japan Society of Applied Physics, and Japan Society of Infrared Science and Technology.
