I am chemist specialized in analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, and metabolomics.
I obtained PhD title from Università degli Studi di Milano (IT) in collaboration with Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research (Milno, IT) in field of human biomonitoring. My scientific spirit have driven me through the most advanced and cut edge projects dedicated to improvements in field of clinical nutrition sciences & biomarker discovery. I obtained habilitation title in Analytical Chemistry (ASN 03/A1) and in Pharmaceutical, Nutraceutical and Food Technologies (ASN 03/D1).
For the last seven years I was responsible for execution and analytical performance of nutritional clinical trials in Metabolomics Unit of Fondazione Edmund Mach in Trento (Italy). I was responsible for development of analytical methods for targeted and untargeted metabolomics of biofluids and tissues, and design of state-of-art workflows for identification of biomarker metabolites related to the health status.
Core of my activities focuses on mechanistic link between metabolome profiling - microbiome structure/function and regulation of host physiology. Of my particular interest were: modulation of bile acids by diet and gut microbiota; associations between the gut microbiota, tryptophan availability and its bioactive microbial metabolites. Main goal of my recent investigations is prevention of CVDs, obesity and related diseases via diet, and the use of combination of metabolomics and clinical measurements as a base for personalized nutrition. I collaborated closely with experts of other technologies, such as microbiologists, geneticists and nutritionists, to establish an understanding of the disposition and key molecular attributes of compounds that contribute to human health. I was involved in several European and local projects: FoodBall, Cabala Diet&Health, Healthmark, PreBioOIL, Aleurone and AVAG with responsibilities focusing on analytical performance and biomarker discovery. I supervised scientific experiments of master students and PhD students, as well as scientific visits of international researchers.
In 2011 I received prestigious Marie Curie Post-Doc Fellowship from Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies Imdea – Agua in area of HR-MS applied to environmental monitoring. This fellowship allowed me to improved analytical and mass spectrometry skills. I designed number of protocols for comprehensive environmental monitoring with use different complementary high resolution techniques: LC-TripleTOF-MS and GCxGC TOF-MS. Main goals of my investigation were determination of emerging contaminants and their breakdown products in surface water and groundwater. Another aim of this fellowship was the evaluation of poly(amidoamines) behaviour in water, their mobility and final destination. This goal was achieved by development of LC–MS method for their identification and quantification with use of LC-QTOF/ HRMS.
During my PhD studies I investigated the impact of waste combustion on level of POPs in breast milk. I spent several months as Visiting Scientist in Institut National de l'Environnement Industriel et des risques (INERIS) and Electricité de France (EDF R&D) where I studied application of environmental fate modelling and PBPK modelling to reconstruct environmental exposure of Italian population to POPs.
I have ten years’ experience in developing analytical methods for targeted and untargeted analysis for wide range of small and medium size molecules: endogenous metabolites, polyphenols and their human metabolites, nutriceuticals, pesticides and their residues, dioxins, POPs, emerging contaminants, nanoparticles, and food compounds. I have hands on experiences with different mass spectrometers including LC-TOF-HRMS, LC-Orbitrap, LC-TripleQuads, LC-Q-Trap. I design of state-of-art workflows for identification of molecules such as endogenous human metabolites, nutriceuticals, emergent contaminants, and their transformation products, or plant compounds, see link.
