个人简介
I was recently awarded the "ComFuturo Fellowship (3rd edition)" to join the "Mechanisms of Growth Control and Cancer" group, led by Professor Maria Dominguez, at the Instituto de Neurociencias in Alicante. This fellowship presents a unique opportunity for me to advance my career in the field of cancer and contribute to the efforts to deepen our understanding of tumor biology and promote the development of new molecules that are more active and effective than current anti-cancer therapies. With over five years of experience in cancer research, I have focused on the intricate pathways involved in its development and progression.
I launched my scientific career in the lab of Dr. Sanchez at the University of Antioquia, Colombia, where we explored the link between malignancy and HPV infection in cervical and head/neck cancers. Our research resulted in two publications: Lopera E. et al., 2012 in Rev. Col. Cancerol. and Quintero K. et al., 2013 in Braz J Otorhinolaryngol. Later on, I pursued my master's project at the Universidad de Alicante in Spain, where I continued my Ph.D. under the guidance of Professor Martín-Nieto. My doctoral research focused on studying the genetics of neurodegenerative diseases that affect the retina. I was fortunate to publish three papers during this period (Uribe M.L. et al., 2016, in Mol. Vis.; Haro C. et al., 2018, Mol. Vis. and Martin-Nieto J. et al., 2020, Neurosci. Lett.). Throughout my Ph.D. journey, I participated in two collaborations. The first one took place at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where we generated and investigated a mouse model of dystroglycanopathies. This project led to a publication in Sci. Rep. by Rubio-Fernandez M. et al., 2018. In the second collaboration, I worked with Dr. Hensbergen at the Leiden University Medical Center (The Netherlands) to analyze the differences in the retinal proteome of our mouse model using mass spectrometry. This research resulted in a publication (Uribe M.L. et al., 2021, J. Proteome Res.) and laid the foundation for a long-standing collaboration that continues to this day.
During my first postdoctoral position (2017-2021) at the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) in Israel, I had the privilege of working in the laboratory of Professor Yosef Yarden, one of the world's leading cancer researchers, at a top-ranked institution. My time in Yarden's lab was instrumental in advancing my molecular and cellular biology skills and enabled me to learn cutting-edge techniques used in cancer research. As part of my work in the lab, I mentored one visiting Ph.D. student and several local and visiting MSc students, which provided me with valuable teaching experience. My research focuses at WIS was on studying the inactivation of possible tumor suppressor genes in response to EGF in human mammary cells. This work led me to uncover the critical role of TSHZ2 in breast cancer metastasis, as published in Sci. Signal. in 2021 (Uribe M.L. et al.). In addition, I collaborated with my team on projects related to lung cancer, as published in EMBO Mol. Med. in 2021 (Marrocco I. et al.) and Cancer Res. in 2021 (Haga Y. et al.). In 2021, I embarked on my second postdoctoral position at the Salamanca Cancer Research Center (CIC-IBMCC), where my primary objective was to receive advanced
training in cutting-edge immunotherapies for breast cancer treatment.
Additionally, I am currently serving as a reviewer for esteemed journals, including CANCERS (MDPI) and Life Science Alliance (EMBO Press). Furthermore, I hold the roles of Assistant Content Editor and reviewer for the peer-reviewed protocols journal, Bio-protocol. Additionally, I am an active member of both the Spanish Association for Cancer Research (ASEICA) and the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR)
