Career Trajectory
Bio
General: I have extensive experience with the many varied facets of working as the team leader, as part of a team, and individually. I have operated my own business successfully and developed expertise in a range of areas, showing a high level of adaptability and creativity. I tend to see situations from different perspectives in order to have empathy for others, and solve problems, if and when they arise, most equitably.
Currently: I am self-employed. Please see my website https://www.thecentreofserendipity.com/
Research and Training: My research experience has included project management, as well as assessing participants and training interviewers in clinical assessment, and I’ve been called on by a variety of professors to train their research assistants. My passion is psychosis, though I’ve developed experience in a variety of other conditions. I have over 10 years’ experience providing clinically diagnostic, cognitive, intellectual and functional assessment of persons aged 16 and over. My neuroscience experience includes electroencephalography, electromyography, and magnetic resonance imaging (structural and functional).
As a mature-age student, I completed my Honours study (published internationally) and then my PhD, in which I created a tool, “ToMas”, and designed a behavioural and neuroimaging paradigm to test specific differences between people with schizophrenia and healthy controls (PhD awarded 2013; publications in preparation or under review/resubmission).
During my PhD, the Survey of High Impact Psychosis (SHIP, 2009-2010) expanded my experience and track record into epidemiology. Even more publications are planned, and a number of Honours, MPhil and PhD studies are close to completion or in preparation (with another two publications arising from a student’s 2015 Honours project).
Teaching: I have provided tutoring for various courses at The University of Newcastle (UON), in the disciplines of Psychology and Medicine, using face-to-face tutoring, demonstrating and online support, as well as Honours co-supervision and RHD support. I also provide on-the-job training for clinical staff who need or want to develop research skills, and support to higher degree research students. This has involved individual training sessions and “Write Club” in which I provide a lecture and workshop on research skills.
Civic Responsibility/Leadership: Since 2015, I have been providing interviews for UoN’s Joint Medical Program Multiple Skills Assessments. I have served on the CMN Grants Review Panel twice (2013, 2016) and I have provided reviews for an international journal since 2016. Current memberships include Biological Psychiatry Australia (2016-), the UoN Early Career Researcher Networks (2016-), and the CMN Research Committee (2013-). Previous committee memberships include the Organising Committees for the Biological Psychiatry Australia Conference (2016), the Translational Cancer Research Conference (Newcastle, 2013), and Forging Links Psychology Postgraduate Conference (2002). I managed the merge of Hunter Neuroscience and Centre for Mental Health Studies within the Research Quality Framework into the Priority Research Centre for Brain and Mental Health (2005-2006). I was Treasurer for a small charity called Together We Inspire Growth (TWIG) in 2003-2004.
