Bio
I obtained my Degree in Pharmacy in the Universidad CEU San Pablo in 2009. PhD with International Mention in 2014. Predoctoral research stays in the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, ICTAN Institute (CSIC) and Joslin Diabetes Center, associated to the Harvard Medical School in Boston. Postdoctoral research in the Universidad de Barcelona and in the Center for Cardiovascular Research, University of Hawaii. I have participated in 7 competitive projects, both national and local (2 as Principal Investigator). I have contributed to 24 scientific papers and more than 10 national and international Meetings in the last 5 years, including participations as invited speaker. 1 Research Six-year term (2012-2017) certified by ANECA.
My current line of research is focused on the use of brown adipose tissue as a therapeutic tool against metabolic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes. We are aiming to create a strategy of autologous transplantation of brown adipocytes obtained from obese patients’ biopsies, that will be previously expanded and activated in vitro. If successful, patients would benefit from this approach, since 1) it increases basal metabolism; 2) it is based on the expansion of a tissue that has a residual presence in obese patients and 3) it avoids the use of systemic drugs and rejections to the transplanted cells. To investigate this approach, we are currently in a “proof of concept” stage, testing different methods to increase brown adipocyte differentiation and thermogenesis in vitro and using mouse models of obesity as cell therapy recipients.
This line lies in the knowledge obtained during my scientific career in the field of the pathophysiology of obesity. We investigated the role of oxidative stress in the pathological alterations that are related to obesity, with a special focus on white adipose tissue. In this sense, I have been the PI in a pre-competitive project that aims to search for biomarkers in patients with morbid obesity but different metabolic profiles.
Finally, my last line of research investigates the adverse vascular outcomes related to obesity. In this sense, we have recently created the MET-VASC (metabolism and vascular function) research group, including collaborations with researchers from Universidad Complutense and the University of Hawaii. We are analyzing the effect of the activation of the reparative branch of the renin-angiotensin system to improve vascular function in obesity.
As a professor, I started my career as a predoctoral fellow in 2010. I was hired as full-time professor in 2012. I am currently a Lecturer (profesor adjunto) in the Chemistry and Biochemistry department of the School of Pharmacy in the Universidad CEU San Pablo. Certified as Profesor Titular by ANECA. I teach in the courses of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genomics in the Degrees of Pharmacy, Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering, both in Spanish and English. I also participate in the Master Program of Biomedical Engineering.
During my career, I have been granted with undergraduate research fellowships in 2008 and 2009, predoctoral research fellowships from 2009 to 2012 and International Visiting Research Student Fellowships in 2010 and 2015, all of them granted by the Universidad CEU San Pablo and Banco Santander.
