I specialized in tissue engineering and gene transfer strategies. During the last years I was involved in the development of a platform to study molecular genetics and disease mechanisms of skin disorders. Using the humanized mouse model system, based on human skin regeneration upon grafting of tissue engineered skin equivalents, we have been able to model a number of genetic skin disorders. These achievements allow us to design cell- and gene-based therapies for both, pre-clinical and clinical studies. Right now I am part of a clinical study based on the use of a bioengineered skin equivalent for the treatment of Epidermolisis Bullosa. This study has been funded by the National Health Ministry in 2009.
