Bio
Dr. Marta Gallardo Fernández holds a degree in Chemistry (2016) from the University of Seville and an Official Master's Degree in Professional Specialisation in Pharmacy in the Speciality of Pharmaceutical Industry (2017). PhD degree (2022) from the University of Seville with excellent qualification "Cum Laude" (25/11/2022) with International Mention.
She has done internships at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC, Instituto de Investigaciones Químicas, Seville) in her pregraduate period.
In 2018 she was the beneficiary of a pre-doctoral FPI grant awarded by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness for the completion of the Doctoral Thesis at the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, Toxicology and Legal Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Seville. She has International Mention thanks to enjoying two pre-doctoral stays of three months each:
Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences, Bordeaux (France) (11/01/2020-11/04/2020). UR OEnologie, EA 4577, USC INRA 1366, IPB - MIB Lab, Dr. Tristan Richard. The tasks performed were: UHPLC/MS/MS characterization of compounds involved in melatonin and hydroxytyrosol synthesis pathway from tryptophan and tyrosine, respectively by yeast during alcoholic fermentation in synthetic must using isotopically labeled tyrosine and tryptophan.
Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon (Portugal) (17/01/2022-15/04/2022). Neurovascular Laboratory, Dr. Maria Alexandra Oliveira Silva Brito. The tasks performed were: in vitro studies of the transport of bioactive compounds synthesized by yeasts present in fermented beverages across the blood-brain barrier.
Her PhD was focused on the bioactivity of compounds synthesised by yeast and present in the Mediterranean diet, in particular hydroxytyrosol. She has measured the neuroprotective, neuroantiinflamatory and antiangiogenic effects of metabolites derived from the metabolism of tyrosine and tryptophan during alcoholic fermentation by yeast. Furthermore, she has used isotopically labelled compounds in order to try elucidate the route of synthesis of hydroxytyrosol and melatonin from tyrosine and tryptophan respectively by yeast in synthetic must.
She has acquired scientific and technical capacities as: cell cultures, western blot, ELISA, thioflavin T assays, transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, qPCR, blood-brain barrier permeability assays, HPLC/MS/MS, fermentations and solid phase extraction.
Her scientific contributions include 6 articles published as first author in JCR journals (all in the 1st quartile of their respective fields) and 2 articles submitted. The main results show the compounds involved in the melatonin and hydroxytyrosol synthesis pathway by yeast during alcoholic fermentation in synthetic must by HPLC/MS/MS. In addition, hydroxytyrosol, among other compounds tested, shows the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier in vitro without affecting its integrity and to reduce the main proinflammatory factors in microglial cells.
She has communicated the results by 9 poster presentations at international and national conferences and one oral communication.
To date, she has participated in 2 research projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (AGL2016-77505-C3-2-R, PID2019-108722RB-C32).
Teaching activities: She has taught a total of 245.5 hours of teaching in the Degree in Pharmacy and in the Double Degree in Pharmacy and Optics and Optometry at the University of Seville in the following subjects: Nutrition and Food Science (162 hours), Pharmacy Laboratory (67.5 hours), Dietetic Nutrition and Diet Therapy and Food (3 hours), Elaboration and Control (8 hours) and Chemoinformatic, Research and History of Pharmacy (5 hours). She has participated in 2 teaching innovation projects during the 2021-2022 academic year. She has published two teaching video material. She has presented 2 posters in 2 national congresses on teaching innovation.
Awards: Prize for the best oral communication at the 2nd Congress of Young Researchers in Agri-Food Sciences (Almeria, 2019) and Prize for the scientific publication of the month of the Faculty of Pharmacy in the academic year 2021-22.
