Host-pathogen dynamics drive adaptation but in agriculture only the pathogens evolve.
Wild crop progenitor plants are a source of novel pathogen resistance. Wild plants do have greater genetic diversity but also, they are adapting to their pathogens, evolving new solutions, right now. Mark is using population genetics to understand this resistance gene evolution and identify new sources of resistance.
Until recently, all crop pathogens lived on wild hosts and only since the invention of farming have pathogens made this jump. Many pathogens have speciated and yet others live on both wild and agricultural plants. Mark uses the differential evolution of pathogens on wild and agricultural hosts to identify the genes important for pathogen invasion and success in agriculture.
