The research program in veterinary clinical pharmacology at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine consists of studies designed to define and improve rational drug therapy in animals. The research emphasis includes studies in a wide variety of animal species, including dogs, cats, horses, ruminants, zoo animals, reptiles, fish, and birds. Current studies focus on the disposition of antibiotics, antifungal drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, gastrointestinal drugs, and analgesic drugs in a variety of animal species. We also have studies on-going to investigate treatment of opioid overdose using animal models. Studies originate from our laboratory, or are performed in collaboration with clinical faculty at NCSU, and investigators at other veterinary colleges, zoos, or pharmaceutical companies. The Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art analytical equipment and has procedures for analyzing most medications administered to animals. The Laboratory maintains software licenses for current pharmacokinetic software capable of performing traditional compartmental modeling, non-compartmental pharmacokinetics, pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) analysis, and nonlinear mixed-effects modeling (NLME) for population studies.
