Bio
Mark A. Beach (A’91–M’06) received the Ph.D. degree with a focus on the application of smart antenna techniques to GPS from the University of Bristol, Bristol, U.K., in 1989.
He then joined the University of Bristol, as a Member of the Academic Staff, where he became a Senior Lecturer in 1996, Reader in 1998, and Professor in 2003. From 2006 to 2010, he was the Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and then he spearheaded the University of Bristol’s hosting of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Communications. He currently manages the delivery of the EPSRC CDT in Communications and leads research in the field of enabling technologies for the delivery of 5G and beyond wireless connectivity, and is also the School Research Impact Director. His current research activities are delivered through the Communication Systems and Networks Group, forming a key component within the University of Bristol’s Smart Internet Lab. He has over 25 years of physical-layer wireless research, embracing the application of spread spectrum technology for cellular systems, adaptive or smart antennas for capacity and range extension in wireless networks, and multiple-input multiple-output-aided connectivity for throughput enhancement. His current research interests include millimeter-wave technologies and flexible radio-frequency technologies for software-definable radio modems.
