Bio
I am an anthropologist with 30 years of research experience in interdisciplinary and international contexts. There are three areas of research in which I have acquired expertise: global health care research, chronic illness and ageing, and the arts in society. Two threads that run through all of this work are the notion of care (in the broadest sense), and diversity. I gained experience in global health through my work in multidisciplinary research programmes on HIV/AIDS care in Tanzania and Uganda, which I later expanded through large interdisciplinary projects across Africa and PNG in the field of malaria prevention.
I later developed expertise in palliative care, long-term care, care for older people, and people with dementia, during the years that I worked at the Cicely Saunders Institute at King’s College London. I conducted parallel methodological studies (research synthesis, mixed-methods, and sensitive issues and vulnerable populations), as well as work on ethics, and the bridging of the research-policy-practice gap.
More recently, I have started to develop collaborations in the field of the arts and gained expertise in artistic research. During the last six years, I led and conducted numerous projects working together with artists – and many other stakeholders – on pressing societal challenges such as ageing, dementia, and matters of diversity and inclusion with both younger and older people, in medical and artistic institutions and community contexts.
