Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr. Marita O’Sullivan has a B.A. in Theoretical Physics and has received her PhD in 2011 from the Magnetism Lab in the School of Physics in Trinity College Dublin. This was completed under the supervision of Prof. J.M.D. Coey FRS and involved developing antiferromagnetic p-type transparent conducting oxide thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition and their integration in bipolar transistor structures. She then took a five-year post-doctoral research assistant position with Prof. M.J. Rosseinsky FRS in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool where her expertise in pulsed laser deposition and layer-by-layer epitaxial growth led to the design and formation of a coherent non-isostructural oxide interface between pyrochlore and perovskite. She also contributed to the growth and characterisation of novel transparent conducting materials, including wide band gap semiconductors and correlated metals. In 2022, after a career break, she obtained an EPSRC sponsored Daphne Jackson Fellowship on Geometrical lattice engineering of correlated metallic oxides where she is currently integrating computational tools, epitaxial heterostructure growth and physical characterisation to explore the possibilities to functionalise the interfaces between non-isostructural and isostructural inorganic materials.
