FIELDWORK EXPERIENCE
In the late 1970s/early 1980s I conducted fieldwork in a Portuguese northern village each summer holidays during my five-year degree in Agronomy. Ever since I joined the Tropical Research Institute in 1987 I have been deeply committed to fieldwork in African rural areas, accumulating ethnographic experience in Angola (9 months in 2014, 2015, 2016), Mozambique (eight months in 2000, 2001 and 2007), Cape Verde (eight months in 1993, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002), S. Tomé and Príncipe (five months in 2002, 2005), the Republic of Guinea (6 weeks in 2003), but especially in Guinea-Bissau. I first went to this country in 1991 and 1992 (3 months), a bit later I conducted there doctoral fieldwork (1993-96) and I usually spend there between 2 and 4 months a year ever since.
SPECIFIC RESEARCH INTERESTS
• Comparative studies of rural societies in view of understanding the different dynamics of technical innovation and of resilience vis-à-vis social and natural disasters as well as their responses to external interventions (colonial/post-colonial; state/non-governmental).
• Grassroots politics: the impact of political and economic liberalization on the creation of patron-client relations and inter-ethnic tensions; the effects of war on rural societies; agrarian tensions that may feed conflicts.
• Political and Human Ecology: the interaction of conservation, environmental change and development; indigenous natural resources management systems; the interaction of conservation and poverty; conflicts between park managers and park inhabitants; the limits of the western conservation models; the social and ecological impact of land laws; the social dynamics of deforestation and fire practices focusing on the way different actors understand this process and respond to it technically and socially.
• Comparative studies of non-governmental development organizations in terms of their sociogenesis, of the impact of their development interventions and of the “organizational landscapes” to which they give rise.
In my research these dimensions are knitted together by an actor-oriented approach and a concern for the analysis of the "weapons of the weak" and the "hidden transcripts", to use the words of James C. Scott.
