个人简介
Dr. Marika Pilou holds a Diploma in Mech. Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and a MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the NTUA (School of Mech. Engineering and School of Electrical and Computer Engineering) and University of Patras (Faculty of Medicine). She obtained her PhD from School of Mech. Engineering of NTUA with a Scholarship from the NCSR “Demokritos” and conducted her research in the Thermal Hydraulics and Multiphase Flow Laboratory (THEM-Lab). Her focus is on computational modelling of fine and ultrafine particles in the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, taking into account external processes (convection, diffusion, inertia, external force fields etc.) with CFD-based methodologies. In addition, she is working on aerosol deposition in the human respiratory tract.
She works in THEM-Lab since 2007 and has collaborated in the following EU funded projects:
- “SCAFFOLD – Innovative strategies, methods and tools for occupational risks management of manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs) in the construction industry” (NMP.2011.1.3-2, Grant agreement number: 280535, May 2012 – April 2015): a) Developing strategies and methods for exposure assessment by modelling, b) Assist in workshops organization and participation in project meetings as laboratory representative, and c) Writing of reports and deliverables
- “NanoTEST – Development of methodology for alternative testing strategies for the assessment of the toxicological profile of nanoparticles used in medical diagnostics” (HEALTH-2007-201335, April 2008 – March 2012): a) Development of physiologically based pharmacokinetic computational model. Development of computational models that describe particle transport and deposition in parts of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, b) Management of the 4th work package and participation in project meetings and workshops, and c) Writing of reports and deliverables.
- “NanoImpactNet - European Network on the Health and Environmental Impact of Nanomaterials” (CSA-CA 218539, April 2008 – March 2012): a) Participation in workshops and young investigators training schools organized by the program, and b) Assist in workshops organization and participation in project meetings as laboratory representative.
In parallel, since 2010 she has co-supervised three Diploma Thesis in collaboration with Prof. S. Tsangaris from the School of Mechanical Engineering, NTUA:
- J. Karytinos, Dose evaluation for preschool and school age children exposed to suspended particles. (April 2014 – February 2016)
- J. Voulgaris, Modelling of transport and deposition of particles dispersed in a liquid medium under the influence of external magnetic fields. (April 2012 – October 2012)
- V. Antonopoulos, Computational study of fluid – particles flow in bifurcations using an Eulerian approach. (April 2010 – October 2011)
Research Interests:
- Biofluid Mechanics & Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD): Study and numerical modelling of biofluid flows in 2D and 3D geometries, such as bends and biofurcations using CFD codes.
- Study of Aerosols and Colloids & Numerical Modelling of Fine and Ultrafine Particles in the Respiratory and Cardiovascular Systems: Study of external processes (convection, diffusion, inertia, external force fields etc.) of particles populations dispersed in gases (aerosols) or liquids (colloids) fluid in the limit of low mass load and volume fraction. Numerical modelling and development of codes (in FORTRAN) to simulate particle transport and deposition in 2D and 3D geometries using a fully Eulerian methodology.
- Occupational Exposure to Engineered Nanoparticles (ENPs): Numerical estimation of the exposure and calculation of internal doses through inhalation. Investigation of dermal exposure.
