Since October 2013 she is the Research Counselor and Leading Spatial Planner at the Institute of Architecture and Urban & Spatial Planning of Serbia (IAUS).
Professor Marija Maksin has published more than 140 scientific and professional papers in domestic and international journals, monographs and proceedings. She has published two monographs (”Space Protection and Reservation – Normative Regularity and Practice”, 2000, author; and ”Sustainable Tourism Development in European Union and Serbia”, 2011, editor and co-author) and three university text-books (”Introduction to the Geography of Tourism with the Basics of Spatial Planning”, 2005, co-author; ”Tourism and Space”, 2007, 2012, author; and ”Management of Natural and Cultural Resources in Tourism”, 2009, co-author). She has participated in over 70 scientific researches, spatial plans, as well as spatial planning studies and programs as an author, consultant and planning or project manager. The most significant research projects, entrusted to the Institute of Architecture and Urban and Spatial Planning of Serbia by the Republican Ministry of Science, in which she has participated as a subproject manager, are “Development, Spatial Planning and Use of the Main Infrastructure Corridors in Serbia” (2002-2004), “Sustainable Spatial Development of Towns in Serbia” (2005-2006), “Towards Sustainable Spatial Development of Serbia” (2008-2011), “The role and implementation of the national spatial plan and regional development documents in renewal of strategic research, thinking and governance in Serbia” (2011-2017) and “Sustainable spatial development of Danube corridor in Serbia” (2011-2017). She is a member of expert team at INTERREG DTP projects: Strengthening Capacities to Enhance Territorial Attractiveness (ATTRACTIVE DANUBE, 2017-2019); and Restoring and managing ecological corridors in mountains as the green infrastructure in the Danube Region (ConnectGREEN, 2018-2021).
The most significant spatial plan in whose preparation she has participated is the Spatial Plan of the Republic of Serbia (1990-1996, 2009-2010, 2019-2020). As a licensed spatial planner and licensed urban planner, she has been project manager or member of the management team for the preparation of spatial plans of special-purpose areas (the watersheds of the Bogovina, Rzav, Stuborovni and Uvac impounding reservoirs, trans-European transport corridors “VII“ and “X“ – the sections Belgrade-Niš and Niš-border with the FYR Macedonia, highway corridors Nis-Merdare and Belgrade-Montenegro border, Kopaonik National Park, Djerdap National Park, Zlatibor Nature Park and Stara Planina Nature Park), regional spatial plans (for South Pomoravlje, Timok Region, Zlatibor-Moravica Region and Kolubara-Macva Region), spatial plans for the municipalities of Valjevo, Novi Pazar, Tutin, Sjenica and Aranđelovac, Master plan of Bor town and Regulatory plan of Gocmanci tourist resort (Kopaonik mountain). She was the manager of the expert team for the preparation of Serbian Sustainable Urban Development Strategy until 2030 (2019).
