Mariana P. Monteiro is Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Multidisciplinary Unit for Biomedical Research (UMIB), of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS), at University of Porto. Before joining this Institute, got her medical education from 1990 to 1996 at Oporto University Medical School (FMUP); earned her Board Certificate in Endocrinology in 2005, at Hospital de Santo António, Porto; was a Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Metabolic Medicine at Imperial College, directed by Prof. S. Bloom, a worldwide recognized reference in the field of gastro-intestinal hormones, were has developed further expertise in basic research techniques; and got her PhD with the thesis “Mechanisms of gastro-intestinal hormone induced weight loss” in 2007 at University of Porto.
Mariana P. Monteiro has a particular interest in Diabetes and Obesity, both in its clinical and research aspects. Currently works in University of Porto where supervises the research of basic scientists working on gastrointestinal hormones and is Scientific Consultant and Clinical Researcher in the Obesity Outpatient Clinic of Hospital de São Sebastião. The research profile of Mariana P. Monteiro is translational in nature, with an interdisciplinary working group that uses a variety of clinical and experimental approaches, spanning from clinical to basic research to understand how regulatory systems, namely body weight control, food intake and metabolism are regulated.
Mariana P. Monteiro has a special interest in Diabetes, Obesity and Appetite regulatory pathways. In the last years has focused her investigation efforts in the following main areas:
1. Study of the mechanism of action of gastro-intestinal hormones.
2. Study of weight loss induced by bariatric surgery, as a model for the study of mechanisms leading to negative energy balance and diabetes remission.
3. Study of epigenetic fingerprints as biomarkers of metabolically healthy obesity phenotypes and of obesity-related comorbidities.
4. The use of gastrointestinal hormones and epigenetic profiles in the development of novel diabetes and obesity treatments.
