RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
- Use of Monte Carlo programs (MCNPX/PENELOPE) for radiation transport simulation to model clinical systems and perform dosimetric studies in medical applications of the ionizing radiation, mainly in mammography, breast tomosynthesis, interventional radiology/cardiology, CT, CT-fluoroscopy and Cone Beam CT.
- Development of procedures for the calculation of radiation dose to patients.
- Data analysis and risk estimation due to radiation exposures from medical applications
- Assessment of the dose reduction and diagnostic image quality in digital mammography and breast tomosynthesis.
- Experimental studies in clinical environment using digital mammography and breast tomosynthesis systems, to perform Entrance Surface Dose (ESD) evaluations, Mean Glandular Dose (MGD) estimations for typical X-ray diagnostic imaging examinations.
- Experimental studies in clinical environment using CT and C-arms equipment, to perform CTDI measurements and DAP evaluations for typical patient examinations.
- Dose and dose rate mapping inside hospital facilities.
- Radiation protection of patients and of medical staff, during interventional procedures (Interventional Radiology and Cardiology).
- Study of radiation detection systems in nuclear security.
- Assessment and study of the radiological emissions of radiological dispersal devices (RDD) and special nuclear materials (SNM).
- Methodologies for preparedness and response to radiological and nuclear emergencies.
- Strategies for radiological risk communication to the general public.
- Management of contaminated foodstuff and consumer goods after a radiological or nuclear emergency.
- Organization of national panels dedicated to the contaminated foodstuffs and consumer goods.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
- Radiological protection and dosimetry of ionizing radiation in medical applications, namely digital mammography, breast tomosynthesis, CT, Cone Beam CT, conventional and interventional radiology.
- Computational dosimetry to model medical equipment, facilities, sources and radioactive materials and detection systems.
- Patient dose assessment.
- Radiation detection systems in medical applications.
- Risk estimation in diagnostic X-ray imaging procedures.
