Career Trajectory
Bio
Prof. Maria Sibilia, PhD is Full professor for Cellular and Molecular Tumor Biology, the Head of the Institute of Cancer Research and the Coordinator of basic and translational Research of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Medical University of Vienna. Her work employs genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs) and human tumor patient material to understand the molecular mechanisms leading to tumor development and progression. One major longstanding interest of her laboratory addresses the function of the EGFR, a tyrosine kinase receptor involved in the development of many tumors, during normal physiology and tumorigenesis focusing on its role in tumor cells as well as in cells of the tumor microenvironment with particular emphasis on tumors of the skin, liver and gastrointestinal tract. Moreover, the role of innate immune cells during host defense, inflammation and anti-tumor immune responses and the interplay between cancer cells and immune cells is an additional focus of her lab.
She received, among others, the Prize of the City of Vienna for Medical Sciences, the Otto Kraupp Prize for the best Habilitation in Austria and the Alois Sonnleitner Prize of the Austrian Academy of Science for outstanding achievements in cancer research. In 2012 she has been elected as an EMBO member, and 2013 as a corresponding member and 2019 as a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). In 2014 she became a member of the Italian Order of knighthood (Commander from the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic) for outstanding scientific achievements. She is a member of various biomedical research boards and coordinator of the PhD program “Inflammation and Immunity”. Since 2016 she holds one of the prestigious advanced ERC grants to investigate novel therapeutic approaches to enhance immunity against tumors.
