Career Trajectory
Bio
My career has been focused in plant-microorganism interaction. After obtaining my BSc Degree in Biology at Malaga University, I continued my training in Granada, carrying out the course of Microbiological Analyst, which was linked to professional practices within the plant-bacterial Interaction group at Zaidín Experimental Station EEZ-CSIC, under the supervision of the Dr. M. Trinidad Gallegos. There, several tasks were carried out related to the identification and characterization of genetic determinants and molecular mechanisms involved in plant mutualistic/pathogenic bacteria interactions.
Subsequently, I was selected as the prime candidate for the PhD scholarship "Biological control and endophytism of the olive root bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens PICF7" in the Plant-microorganism Interaction group at the Institute of Sustainable Agriculture (IAS)-CSIC, under the supervision of Dr. Jesús Mercado. As a consequence, I obtained the MSc Degree in Plant Production at the University of Cordoba. Besides, I conducted several research stays in the Department of Plant-microbe interactions at the University of Biology in Utrecht (Netherlands) under the tutelage of Dr. Peter Bakker, as well as in the Genetic Department at the University of Sciences of Malaga under the supervision of Dr. Cayo Ramos. The main research line of my PhD thesis was to elucidate which characteristics of the P. fluorescens PICF7 strain are determinants for the biological control that exerts on the soil pathogenic fungus Verticillium dahliae, the causative agent of one of the most important diseases that affect olive tree, Verticillium wilt of olive (DOI: 10.1007/s00248-011-9827-6, 68 cites; DOI: 10.1111/1462-2920.12725, 23 cites). As a complement, similar studies were carried out in Arabidopsis thaliana model (herbaceous) plant for its possible use as a substitute for the olive tree (DOI: 10.3389/fmicb.2015.00266, 20 cites). Likewise, the possible ability of PICF7 to control other diseases such as olive knot disease and sunflower mildew caused by the pathogenic bacteria P. savastanoi pv. savastanoi and the oomycete Plasmopara halstedii were respectively explored. Once my PhD grant was finished, I was hired by the Department of Experimental Biology at the University of Jaen, under the supervision of Dr. Juan Bautista Barroso, in order to develop biomarkers for the analysis of the phytosanitary state of olive. Finally, after the publication of the most relevant results in scientific journals, I produced my thesis dissertation as a compendium of articles with international mention. Its presentation and defense was carried out entirely in English obtaining the qualification of Cum Laude.
Subsequently, I worked as postdoc for three years at the Grapevine and Wine Sciences Institute as managing a project related to the effect of abiotic stress conditions on grapevine trunk disease incidence in David Gramaje´s lab. I was also involved on diagnostics of grapevine trunk disease pathogens by using the innovative molecular tool ddPCR, and in unraveling the grapevine microbiome by using next-generation sequencing technologies.
Recently, I became member of the sustainable engineering and agriculture group at Leon University, hired as postdoc to investigate the application of Trichoderma strains in the sustainable production of beans and hop. In addition, I am participating in testing diverse bacteriophages in the control of Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola in bean.
