Bio
Dr. Costa is currently a sponsored researcher by UFRN/PETROGAL/CAT4METMIX project. She recently completed 4-year postdoctoral research associated with Professors Eduardo Ferreira and Hellmut Eckert in the Department of Materials Engineering and Physics Institute of São Carlos at the University of São Paulo, São Carlos, Brazil, and scholarship in collaboration from Center for Research, Technology and Education in Vitreous Materials - CeRTEV/FAPESP - http://www.certev.ufscar.br. This research center is a major academic research and technology institution devoted to glass science and it dominates the scene within Brazil and Latin America. The goal of CeRTEV is to deal with fundamental research and development of new materials with technologically interesting properties applicable in different areas of glasses and glass-ceramics. Specifically, Dr. Costa’s branch of research was related to the creation of advanced porous materials capable of converting biomasses into fuels and fine chemicals. To advance her knowledge in the processing of biomass, Dr. Costa conducted fifteen months of postdoctoral research at the Imperial College London, where she applied the materials created at CeRTEV in the production of fine chemicals like HMF and furfural. Before joint research at USP and Imperial College London, Dr. Costa was Associate Research Fellow at Kent State University, in Ohio, for two years, working on nanostructured alumina- and silica-based catalysts, zeolites, and carbons. Other international experience includes her time as an exchange doctoral student for one year at Kent State University.
Dr. Costa has expertise in the following materials characterization techniques: physisorption, wide and small-angle powder X-ray diffraction (WAXRD, SAXRD), thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), pyrolysis (Py) coupled with gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image analyses. With 14+ years engaged in innovative research in Chemistry and Materials Science, Dr. Costa produced 13 peer-reviewed publications, 1 patent, and has earned 4 awards & recognitions for her contributions.
