Maria Tektonidou is Professor of Internal Medicine - Rheumatology, Head of Rheumatology Unit and Head of the National Center of Expertise for Rare and & Complex Connective Tissue and Musculoskeletal Diseases at the First Department of Propaedeutic Internal Medicine, Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. She is a member of the Executive board of the "Joint Academic Rheumatology program, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens", EULAR Centre of Excellence. From 2009 to 2019, she has been working (1-2 monthly visits/year) as a Guest Researcher at the NIAMS/NIH, Bethesda, USA.
Dr. Tektonidou is a member of the steering committee -she was Executive Committee member for 6 years (2014-2021)- of the ‘AntiPhospholipid Syndrome Alliance for Clinical Trials and InternatiOnal Networking (APS ACTION) and a member of the Executive Committee of the ‘European Lupus Society-SLEuro’ (2018-present). She is leading the ‘EULAR Antiphospholipid syndrome study group” (2019-) and she is a member of the ‘European Forum on Antiphospholipid Antibodies’ and the “EULAR Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) study group”.
She was a member of the ‘Task Force on Non-criteria APS Manifestations and on Catastrophic APS’ and the Task force group for ‘Evidence-based recommendations for the prevention and long-term management of thrombosis in antiphospholipid antibody-positive patients’. She was co-author of the ‘EULAR recommendations for the management of SLE with neuropsychiatric manifestations’, the ‘Joint EULAR/ERA-EDTA recommendations for the management of adult and paediatric lupus nephritis’, the ‘EULAR recommendations for women's health and the management of family planning, assisted reproduction, pregnancy and menopause in patients with SLE and/or APS’ and the “2019 European League Against Rheumatism/American College of Rheumatology Classification Criteria for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus”. She is Steering committee member of the task force for the development of the New “ACR/EULAR Classification Criteria for Antiphospholipid Syndrome”.
She has recently chaired the ‘EULAR Recommendations for the management of APS in adults’ and the “EULAR recommendations for the cardiovascular management of RMDs including SLE and APS” and she is currently chairing the "Development and Validation of a EULAR disease activity score in Antiphospholipid syndrome" project.
She has participated as clinical investigator in clinical trials on Rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, SLE and APS and she was invited speaker in several European and International scientific meetings.
Dr. Tektonidou’s major research interests include the epidemiology, clinical manifestations and management, comorbidities, health-related quality of life, and long-term outcomes of patients with systemic autoimmune diseases, especially APS and SLE. She has over 200 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and book chapters with 15,000 citations and h-index 51 (Google Scholar). She is in the editorial board of 4 international journals, associate editor for the Rheumatology (Oxford) journal, and served as a reviewer for more than 60 international journals.
