Bio
Professor Maria de Sousa
Biographical note - proposal
Maria de Sousa carried her scientific activity in England, Scotland and in the United States before becoming Professor of Immunology, at the Abel Salazar Institute for the Biomedical Sciences Institute and research coordinator at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC). She is since 2010 Emeritus Professor at University of Porto.
In 1966, Maria de Sousa as a Gulbenkian Foundation fellow at the laboratory of Experimental Biology at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in Mill Hill, London, .published two articles reporting key discoveries in immunology regarding the distribution of lymphocytes in the peripheral lymphoid organs of neonatally thymectomized mice, contributing to the geographical and functional mapping of the T cell area. Continuation of her studies as Lecturer in Immunology at the University of Glasgow led her to define ecotaxis, as the ability of cells of different origins to migrate and organize themselves in well-defined areas of the peripheral lymphoid organs. In New York, as Associate member and head of the Cell Ecology Lab at the Sloan Ketterig Institute for Cancer Research she did some work on the distribution of circulating lymphocytes in Hodgkin’s disease and started her work on iron genes and cells of the immune system
In Porto she studied the role of the immune system in patients with a genetic disease of iron overload, known as hereditary hemochromatosis and demonstrated the spontaneous development of iron overload in beta 2 microglobulin knockout mice..
Maria de Sousa has also given a major contribution in the academic field first with the establishment of an MSc in Immunology in 1985. Later, In 1996, she was one of the co-founders of the Graduate Program in Basic and Applied Biology" (GABBA) at the University of Porto. She became an Emeritus Professor in 2010.
She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK), a member of EMBO and of AcademiaNet. In 2004 the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education distinguished Maria de Sousa with the prize "Stimulating Excellence". In 2009 she was awarded the Gold Medal for Scientific Achievement by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. In January 2012, she was honored with the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Sant'Iago da Espada.
