Bio
Double doctorate degree in “Bioprocess Engineering” (Wageningen University (WU),
Netherlands, 2011) and in Environmental Sciences (University of Huelva (UHU), 2012) with a PhD Thesis awarded by 2 institutions (Izaak an Anna Ida Kortewerg- Netherlands and UHU-Spain). Postdoctoral stay of 21.5 months at WU (2011-2012) where I initiated the co-supervision of PhD, MsC and BsC students and I started to show leading capabilities (role as Scientific Coordinator of several projects (EU 7th Framework Programme, Dutch Government, etc)). In December 2012, hired as postdoctoral researcher at UHU. In 2016 obtained ANECA accreditations (PCD, PUP, PAD) and awarded by MINECO grant “Juan de la Cierva-Incorporación" (contract June 2017-Sept 2019). In 2020 obtained "I3 Certificate" and in 2022 I was awarded by MINECO grant "Ramón y Cajal, call 2021". During this time, I acted as Scientific Coordinator of the research activities of the group in the frame of 2 international projects (7th EU Framework Programme) and I participated from the rest of the scientific activities/projects of the group. Since 2018, I show a strong leadership dimension, and I am the Co-IP of the Biotechnology of Microalgae Unit at UHU (associated to RENSMA), with a team composed of 8-10 scientists, few laboratories and pilot facilities. I am actively involved in the search of funding as well as in the management of the group.
In total, I published 37 papers (51% privileged position of authorship, 46% international collaborations) and I am preparing 6 more. I presented more than 100 communications in international congresses (including several oral presentations).
Thanks to my experience in International competitive projects, I have an
interesting contact network (companies and public institutions) which enable to set scientific collaborations at International level. As a result, I am/have been IP in 68/83 Contracts with foreign companies and in R+D projects funded by EU, Junta de Andalucía-Fondos FEDER-UHU and Fundación Ceimar. In total, more than 1.4M€ funding has been obtained (84% from international entities, 48% in the last 3 years).
Finally, I act as referee of R+D proposals for different public entities (H2020
Programs, CONICYT (Chile)) and for a private company (SGS ICS Ibérica). I also belongs to the Scientific Board of the company UVERA (Poland) and I act as referee for several indexed scientific journals.
My main research line is focused on the search of new and sustainable strategies for the production of interesting metabolites by mean of using microalgae
in the framework of the Bioeconomy in order to provide new, innovative, cost-effective, efficient and sustainable resources to satisfy society demands while preserving biodiversity and protecting environment. During the postdoctoral stay at WU, I could broaden my experience in the production of valuable compounds-enriched microalgal biomass at pilot scale, and the postdoctoral period at UHU strengthen my capabilities to supervise students, to coordinate scientific activities and to obtain funding. As a consequence, I initiated my own research line, always related to the sustainable production of valuable compounds-enriched microalgal biomass of extremophilic microalgae species.
I have a strong activity in the transference of scientific results and I am responsible of different full time working contracts of scientists in the frame of the 68-83 contracts with companies, allowing young scientists to work in a scientific environment, with the stabilization prospective in the international companies. I also supervise students from Technical Schools.
I am IP and Co-IP in projects with companies (68/83) -around 600.000€- which implies a great opportunity for the development of the region thanks to the atraction of international companies -some of them widely recognized in the sustainability and circular economy ambit. Finally, I participate from dissemination activities which are in direct contact with society (European Research Night, Semana de la Ciencia, interviews, and talks in schools and high schools). I am also volunteer in the Asociation Inspiring Girls, which aim is the motivation of girls in the STEM careers. Finally, I supervise 4 PhD students (1 Industrial Doctorate) and have sucessfully supervised 2 others (Cum Laude PhD thesis awarded with International Mention at University of Huelva). Moreover, during my posdoctoral stay at U. of Wageningen I supervised 3 PhD students. I also supervise BsC Degree Thesis (7), MsC Degree Thesis (8), internship students (6: U. of Bochum, U. of Brno, U. of Wageningen, U. of Lisboa, etc.), and students in external curricular internships (12: FP, Bsc and MsC). Finally, I acted as referee in 5 Doctoral Thesis Defenses.
