María Camacho is a researcher in microbiology at the Andalusian Institute of Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training (IFAPA) Seville, Spain. Her research interests are focused on bacterial diversity and plant-microbe interactions, particularly in bacteria involving biocontrol or promotion traits to be used as inoculants. She did her PhD at the IFAPA in 1994. Then she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Sevilla for two years. In 2009, she became as Titular Researcher at IFAPA joining the position of Principal Researcher in 2018. She has worked on the rhizobium-legume interaction by selecting and characterizing (physiological and molecularly) rhizobia strains for different legumes, and she has also worked on the production of inoculants, specifically in the search for alternative supports to peat. She has a strong background in bioprospecting of plant-growth promoting bacteria from different crops and ecosystems, including legumes, olive, marshes, mycosphere of A. caesarea, plum, halophytes, berries and almond. Many of these bacteria have been identified and characterized as biological agents to be used as biocontrol against several pathogen fungi. In relation with plant-microbe interactions, she has experience in the restoration of saline soils by using halophytes or contaminated agriculture soils by using leguminous plants. In both cases assisted by selected microorganisms. Recently, metagenomic studies of bacterial populations are being addressed with respect to both biotic and abiotic factors
