- Maria C. Pedroso de Lima (h-factor 51, Scopus) received her Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Imperial College of Science and Technology at the University of London and her Habilitation (Agregação) degree in Biochemistry from the University of Coimbra.
- She is Full Professor and Leader of the Group "Therapies Targeting Brain Diseases: Genomic and Lipidomic Approaches" at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal.
- Her research activity has been centred on the development of novel functionalized nanosystems for targeted delivery of different types of therapeutic molecules (including drugs, plasmid DNA, antisense oligonucleotides, siRNAs and miRNAs) into specific tissues /cells and of innovative molecular therapeutic strategies, which have been evaluated both in cell and animal models of cancer and neurodegenerative disorders, towards their clinical application. Investigation of the mechanisms underlying the process of drug/nucleic acid delivery and the molecular/cellular events associated with the therapeutic response constitutes an important focus of her research activity. She is currently working on a project addressing the role of cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) in glioblastoma (GBM) progression and recurrence, and identification of new molecular targets involved in the renewal and differentiation of GSCs. The primary aim is to fight GBM through modulation of the activity of key miRNAs that control GBM molecular pathogenesis, particularly dysregulated miRNAs that are implicated in the mechanisms of GSCs-associated drug resistance, as a therapeutic strategy to be combined with new-generation chemotherapy.
- She published over 180 full papers in international peer-reviewed journals and 33 international scientific book chapters, with more than 8270 citations (Scopus).

- She received the international 2013 Exiqon award for a grant proposal on the development and application of a targeted nanosystem for systemic delivery in a miRNA-based therapy towards glioblastoma.
- She has served as evaluator of research proposals, both for the European Union and national governments (United Kingdom, Israel, Poland and Portugal).
- She has been responsible for national and international research projects funded by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, European Union, CRUP and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
