Bio
Maria Cristina Bressan graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Universidade Federal de Pelotas (Brazil) in 1988, received a M.Sc. degree in Animal Science from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in 1992, and a Ph.D. degree in Food Engineering from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas in 1998.
Starting in 1994, MC Bressan began working at the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA - Minas Gerais, Brazil), first as Assistant Professor and later on as Full Professor. Between 2002 and 2004 she was Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Food Science of UFLA, in 2003 was recognized as a CNPq Researcher and in 2006 became a permanent member of the Evaluation Panel of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the Foundation for Research Support of the State of Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG, Belo Horizonte, Brazil).
In her activity as Professor of the Universidade Federal de Lavras, MC Bressan established a research group essentially focused on the characterization of meat and meat products from different animal species, the improvement of the nutritional and health value of meat by managing its lipid profile, and the assessment of genetic influences underlying meat quality traits. In this period, she advised or co-advised 19 Master of Science students (13 in Food Science and 6 in Animal Science) and 15 Ph.D. students (9 in Food Science and 6 in Animal Science). Up until 2006, she had 3 projects approved as principal investigator, funded by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).
In 2006, MC Bressan received a scholarship from CAPES to carry-out Post-doctoral training activities in the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, and has stayed working in Portugal since then. In 2007 she applied successfully for a contract as Researcher under the «Ciência 2007/2008» Program of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), developing activities from May 2008 until May 2013 in Instituto Nacional de Recursos Biológicos (currently Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária – INIAV IP). During this period, MC Bressan submitted to FCT a research project as Principal Investigator, entitled «Genetics of meat quality in Iberian pigs» - PTDC/CVT/116729/2010, which was approved and is currently underway. In addition, she participates as collaborating researcher in the FCT-financed project «Nutritional strategies to increase bioactive fatty acids proportion in lambs eatable fat» - PTDC/CVT/103934/2008. Moreover, she is the scientific leader of the scientific innovation project entitled «Improvement by ageing of meat from cattle raised in extensive systems» (Project No. 46131 - Proder Program). In this period, MC Bressan has reinforced her international collaborations, and kept her teaching and tutorial activities, lecturing invited courses in Brazil and currently advising 2 Ph.D. students and several B.Sc. students.
