Bio
Dr Maria Agaliotis PhD (USyd), MPH (USyd), BSocSci (UNSW), B Nurs (USyd), is an experienced mixed method researcher and tertiary educator who joined the Australian Institute of Health Service Management (AIHSM), University of Tasmania, Australia in January 2019. She has a diverse background in clinical nursing and the social sciences (majoring in Political Science) and a Master’s of Public Health. She has over 20 years’ experience as a public health researcher from working in the Cancer Council New South Wales, National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre and The George Institute.
Her educational, research interest and expertise is in health management. Her research projects include improving the quality of working life impacting health worker performance and improving the quality of patient care and outcomes, especially among vulnerable groups. She is also interested in strengthening service delivery by investigating effective management, including cost efficiency, strategies. Her focus is on identifying and improving measurements of management and staff and patient healthcare outcomes by modifying work practices, behaviour, culture, and workplace design. Her overall aim is to integrate research findings and evidence into healthcare policy and practice. This includes, for example, organisational processes, policy and interprofessional collaboration strategies. Maria is part of an international group - OMERACT (Outcome Measures in Rheumatology) Worker Productivity Special Group. This group consists of international academics from the Institute of Health and Work, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia and the University of Manchester. She is an Associate Editor for BMJ Open Quality and reviews regularly for international journals in the field of workplace productivity and workers with chronic conditions including BMJ Quality, Medicine, BMC Health Services Research, International Journal of Epidemiology and Arthritis Care and Research.
