Bio
Dr. Marcel Culcasi is Associate Researcher, CNRS member of SMBSO (Sondes Moléculaires en Biologie et Stress Oxydant) group at the Institute of Radical Chemistry (ICR, CNRS UMR 7273) based in Marseille (France). He is a recognized expert in the design and synthetic procedures of molecular probes (i.e., nitrone spin traps, nitroxides and aminophosphonates) for biological non invasive NMR and EPR applications. After a Ph.D. in Physical and Organic Chemistry, he continued his work by helding a 2-years postdoctoral research position at the Center for Magnetic Resonance in Biology and Medicine in the Campus of the Marseille Medical School. He then moved to Montpellier for 3 years in a private research company for pharmaceutical development (CRID) and developed a priviledged partnership with the University of Montpellier (France). He has conducted several translational projects developing EPR-based methods aimed at characterizing free radical processes involved in neurological and cardiovascular pathologies, to define new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. In 1994, he joined the french CNRS as a Research Associate and Aix-Marseille University as a Professor of chemistry in 1998. He holds currently the responsibility of several academic and industrial projects and is regularly the recipient of research awards. He has published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, patents and book chapters.
