STATISTICAL SHAPE MODELS (SSM)
In 2004 the idea was born to calculate anatomical mean shapes of bone surfaces by different mathematical procedures like the geometrical morphometrics. Clinical developments based on this idea were the "Anatomical Prefomed Orbital Plate" (2006), the "Anatomical Preformed Reconstruction Plate" (2009), the "Preformed Midface Trauma Set" (2016) and, the "Catching Condyle Implant" (2017).
PATIENT SPECIFIC IMPLANTS (PSI)
In 2008 the possibility in designing and producing an "In-House orthognathic Splints" by 3D Printers was introduced. The Selected Laser Melting (SLM) Technology for titanium was used to realize the new surgical approach "Waferless Orthognathic Surgery" which is based on patient specific implants encoding the movements of the bony segments. In 2015 the idea of the cloud based "IPS-Gate" was realized and clinically introduced as a plattform for patient specific implants including the life circle management system for the engineers.
DATA PROCESSING / COMPUTER ASSISTED SURGERY (CAS)
A soft tissue simulation for orbital reconstruction was designed taking into account the insertion of virtual orbital implants (2011). Based on this idea in 2013 the automatization of the segmentation procedure was realized by creating the „Atlas Segmentation“ of the skull which facilitates the virtual planning in navigation and computer assisted surgery.
3D-PRINTING MATERIALS
The lack of osteointegration of existing printable alloplastic materials such as titanium was significantly improved by modifying the printing architecture and surface structure of the material (2019). A large animal study showed potential indications for printed customized PLGA cages in the field of bony reconstructions (2020). A new polyolefin material with certified biocompatibility was used for filament-based 3D printing in combination with new digital data processing and 3D printing procedures showing great promise in establishing decentralized additive manufacturing (2020).
