Bio
I am a social work university lecturer at the International University of Distance Education (UNED, Spain) [previously at UNIR (2021-23), Essex (2018-21), Northumbria (2015-18)]. And I am the Vice-president of the European Social Work Research Association (ESWRA) for April 2022-April 2024.
I have a degree and professional experience in social work (Diplomatura, UCM, 2006), a degree in psychology (Licenciatura, UNED, 2014) and a MA and a PhD in Social Work (Durham, University 2012, 2017). My PhD was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council of the United Kingdom (UK). My research efforts have focused on, and revolved around, human rights in relation to social work. From a human rights and critical theory lenses, I have conducted both independent and collaborative research on social work education and practice, social work facing structural inequalities and social conflict, and social work history (with a focus on the "dark histories" of social work - i.e. the profession's track record of complicity with oppression and human rights violations). In terms of research methodology, I have engaged with realist paradigm based mixed-methods research (predominantly qualitative). I count on high-impact publications in English and Spanish (details below). And I am an international advisory board member of the journals European Social Work Research and Critical Proposals in Social Work/Propuestas Críticas en Trabajo Social.
I am part of social work research networks across several countries. These include the "Alter-Action" consolidated research group of the UCLM, the UNIR research group "Bienestar e Intervención Social" (Sub-grupo Refugiados y Migraciones), the social work research group of the University of Essex, and the newly established ESWRA Research Group "Social work, Crime and Criminal Justice", which I co-lead together with Caroline Bald (University of Essex). I have been co-PI of the work of a multidisciplinary team contracted (open competition selection) by the British Association of Social Workers to produce a foundational report on Human Rights in Social Work (7 researchers, 4 UK universities).
