Career Trajectory
Bio
Since I graduated in Forestry Engineering in 2005, I have been working in academia focused on water, obtaining my doctorate in Environmental and Hydraulic Engineering in 2012 at the Technical University of Valencia (Spain), where I currently develop my career as a post-doc researcher and assistant professor at the Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering Department. I am mainly interested in fundamental and applied research on forest management, eco-hydrology and environmental hydraulics, particularly in upper catchment environments and riparian zones, to inform goods and services provisioning, conservation, management and restoration practices.
During my graduate studies in the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (Spain) and Fluid Mechanics Department of University of Zaragoza (Spain), I acquired a strong multidisciplinary theoretical knowledge in fluvial hydraulics, aquatic and terrestrial ecology, hydro-geomorphology and numerical modeling. More specifically, my Ph.D. was focused on understanding the flooding (surface and groundwater flows) and morphologic dynamics of floodplains within the frame of ecological restoration to inform management plans.
Then I joined the Forestry Science and Technology Group (ReForest) at the Polytechincal University of Valencia (Valencia, Spain) to assess the interactions between sediment, vegetation and water quality in semiarid Mediterranean forest plot and basin scales. To implement this project, I used and further developed my advanced skills in hydrological modeling. This post-doc experience helped me extending from middle river basin areas to headwaters environments, learning new ways to apply eco-hydrology ecosystem management to assure and enhance the goods and services productions such as water. During this post-doc experience, I combine field work with data analysis and statistical and numerical modeling. The field work allowed me to learn designing, building, installing and programing sensors such as band dendrometers, sap-flow sensors (HRM method) or pressure sensors for piezometers.
With this project, Reforest group opened a research line that resulted in national and international research projects where we are currently working. As this line of research progressed, the involvement of citizens and stakeholders became a key point to make it successful. In this sense, I successfully coordinated the proposal of a European LIFE project (RESILIENTFORESTS) that involved not only research centers from three different countries, but also a headwaters’ village and stakeholders. Within this project I have had two major roles. On the one hand, I have been fully responsible of the project management, which implies coordinating teams from 3 different countries in order to accomplish all the project milestones and deliverables. On the other hand, I have also been responsible of the eco-hydrological simulation the three study sites (Spain, Portugal and Germany), where I have combined process-based models, field data and satellite information in order to characterize and quantify the goods and services provisioning of upper catchment forests.
My work at the Environmental Hydraulics Department combines both, research and teaching. During the last four years I have been teaching subjects such as forest ecology, wildfire control, forest planning, adaptative forest management, fluid mechanics, surface hydrology, environmental flows, hydraulic and hydrological modeling, advanced statistics and operative investigations, or environmental impacts in degrees like Civil Engineering, Forestry Engineering or Environmental Hydraulics Master. This teaching opportunity has increased my multidisciplinary and has allowed me to go deeper into subjects such as optimization algorithms or computer programming.
I am a rigorous, dedicated, effective and fast-learning person, able to develop and manage innovative research projects. I am a natural team-worker who loves putting people together to stimulate synergies, both locally and internationally. In thirteen years of research experience, I have participated in 34 peer-reviewed publications with peers, graduate students and managers of different countries and on different disciplines (ecology, forestry, hydrology, biology, limnology, biogeochemistry, flow modeling, statistics ecology, hydro-geomorphology, soil). I have worked in four labs in Spain, and I am still involved in projects with my former colleagues of all these labs and others.
