Bio
In 2014, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Seville. In 2015, I was hired by the company Tecnofood I+D Soluciones S.L as laboratory manager in a project Recupera 2020 that we carried out together with the research group Phytochemicals, Bioactivity and Process Development of the Department of Food Phytochemistry of the Instituto de la Grasa. A year later I started my research career as a student of the PhD Program in Biotechnology, Engineering and Chemical Technology at the Pablo de Olavide University, after obtaining a contract within the Industrial PhD Training Program co-funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness together with the company Tecnofood. As a result of this work I was able to develop my doctoral thesis, entitled "Study of 3,4- dihydroxyphenylglycol (DHFG): sources, obtaining and anti-inflammatory and phyto-regulatory properties" (thesis for which I opted for Extraordinary Doctoral Mention) under the direction of Dr. Guillermo Rodríguez Gutiérrez of the Instituto de la Grasa-CSIC and Dr. Juan Antonio Espejo Calvo of the company Tecnofood. I determined for the first time the phyto-regulatory and anti-inflammatory potential of one of the most important and active phenols of the olive, recently detected and isolated, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol (DHFG). The development of the work I carried out in the thesis has given rise to two patents currently licensed and being exploited by the ECONATUR group. The first, entitled "Use of 3,4- Dihydroxyphenylglycol (DHPG) as a plant growth regulator", which is based on the phyto-regulatory properties of DHFG that will allow its use as a unique natural herbicide that inhibits the growth of unwanted plants and enhances the growth of species cultivated in organic, conventional or mixed crops. And the second patent entitled "Procedure for obtaining 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol (DHFG)", which is based on the application of a new extraction and purification system of this phenol that allows its commercialization at an agronomic level and in food. At the same time I am co-author of 28 scientific articles published in high impact index journals within the JCR and recognized in the SCI, 22 Q1, 6Q2 of which are in the first quartile, with an H-index of 7. In addition to 11 contributions to both national and international conferences with both written and oral contributions and as part of the organizing team of the event. In terms of contributions to society, I have also collaborated in four projects focused on the industrialization of the purification of DHFG, hydroxytyrosol and its phytoregulatory properties, and in projects on the determination of the anti-inflammatory properties of these phenols among which I highlight the Project framed in the FEDER-INNTERCONECTA Program in which I participated as Principal Investigator. My line of research based on obtaining bioactive compounds from products and by-products of the food industry, mainly from the olive oil industry, is reinforced by the experience I acquired during a pre-doctoral stay of 18 months working at Provexis Natural Products Limited LPC, a technology-based company belonging to the Rowett Nutrition Centre of the University of Aberdeen (Scotland, UK) studying the activity of natural extracts on cardiovascular diseases in ex vivo models and in humans. For the development of some of these compounds, I have been a very active promoter of a technology-based company called Subproductos Vegetales del Mediterráneo S.L. (SPIN-OFF392139). My experience in the by-products sector has also led me to join the International Association of Mediterranean Agroindustrial Wastes (IAMAW) with the aim of unifying efforts for the revaluation of agroindustrial by-products in the Mediterranean basin. I am currently enjoying a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral training contract at the University of Seville.
