个人简介
María Muñoz has a degree in Biology, an interuniversity master's degree (University of Malaga-University of Granada) in “Geographic Analysis in the Territorial Planning, Geographic Information Technology” where she presented the Master’s work “GIS applied to marine regionalization, singularities and water connectivity in the Gulf of Cadiz and Alboran Sea. Bases for a Marine Protected Area proposal” with the outstanding evaluation (10). In July 2019 she presented her PhD. Thesis “Pelagic ecosystem connectivity and risk assessment applied to Marine Spatial Planning in the Gulf of Cadiz, Cape of Gata and Alboran Sea”. It is an international Thesis with the outstanding evaluation cum laude, and achieved the award of the most outstanding PhD of the doctorate program 2018-2019. The Thesis combines geography, biology and oceanography, is composed of 4 articles SCI (2 in the first quartile (Q1) and 2 in the second quartile (Q2)), and initiate a new transversal research field necessary to achieve the objectives of the Blue growth and agenda 2020. The last article of the PhD. Thesis has been presented in the FAO as example for sustainable management and identification of risk areas. Furthermore, it was used to propose an Essential Fish Habitat in the Bay of Málaga.
It is worth to highlight the transdisciplinary training of the applicant and the analysis techniques applied in the Thesis and articles, most of them acquired in the interuniversity master's degree and three stays in foreign research centres (Germany: Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Frankfurt), that is to say in other institutions than the University of Malaga. The techniques comprise GIS, remote sensing, Matlab, R, General Additive Models (Muñoz et al., 2015, 2017, 2018), download and analysis of Copernicus data (Ramírez et al., 2021), applied to modelling and risk assessment in marine spatial planning approaches. Once finished the PhD, the applicant worked at the Spanish Oceanographic Institute (IEO) at the Oceanographic Centre (O.C) of Málaga (02/01/2019-31-05/20/21) and the IEO-CSIC (O.C) of Baleares (01/06/2021-10/01/2022). Since 19/01/2022- actuality the applicant works with a temporal contract as “Personal Docente Investigador” (category 5) at the University of Málaga. Likewise, the candidate has shown a high capacity for teamwork whose fruits are transdisciplinary articles and chapters with many authors (50) and different institutions/affiliations (19).
The strength of the CV results in the novelty and relevance of the articles and methods applied. For example, the consideration of connectivity in Marine Spatial Planning was proposed by M. Muñoz in 2015 and is now subject of an EU Cost project (UNICORN). The article of Muñoz et al., 2018a, indicates cumulative pressures and user conflicts in Spanish territorial waters of the Alboran sea, three years before the Spanish Maritime Space Management Plans were published in (2021). Finally, the last article of Muñoz et al., (2023) shows the whole carbon footrprint of extractive fishery, including carbon release from the seafloor by bottom trawling providing new information for sustainable extractive fishing approaches and reduction of greenhouse gases from fishing.
The mentioned articles are typical of a person with autonomy and initiative facing new research fields and challenges. In this case; the research fields respond to EU requirements, which enters in a new decade with unprecedented use and management challenges in the marine environment in the framework of blue growth and EU climate policy.
María Muñoz has 13 publications SCI (5 Q1 and 8 Q2), 5 of them as first author, 5 book chapter, and 24 congress communications, 3 stay at foreign recognized institution, 1 co-supervisor of Master dissertation, 2 current PhD supervision, is Editorial Board Member of Ocean and Coastal Management, 34 reviews for Ocean and Costal Management, 12 Oceanographic research cruises.
