Career Trajectory
Bio
Manuel Pedro Fernandes Graça (MPFG) is graduated in Physics Engineering (1998) from Aveiro University (UAveiro). In 2000 he finished his Master's degree in Science and Materials Engineering and completed his Ph.D. in Physics in 2006, in cooperation between the University of Aveiro and the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) in Brasil. After the Ph.D., he worked, as director of the Energy Department, at Prirev-Surface Technology S.A. and after as principal researcher at UAveiro and i3N. Since 2020 he is a professor at the Physics Department of UAveiro and invited professor of the postgraduate master course of Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Ceará in Brasil.
MPFG is specialized in experimental techniques in the area of solid-state physics, with a major focus on materials' electrical and magnetic properties and micro and nanomaterials processing. He is a member of the associated laboratory i3N, Institute of nanostructures, nanomodelling, and nanofabrication since its foundation.
MPFG is the author and co-author of 2 books, 30 chapter books, and +300 articles in international peer-review journals, plus 14 in conference proceedings, more than 4500 citations, and an h-index of 33 based on the Scopus platform. MPFG gave +50 oral communications including international plenary sessions (11 plenaries in the last 5 years). He is a co-author of more than 230 posters in international scientific meetings and 3 patents/utility models. MPFG was Editor Chief at the Nova Science Publishers of the book ''Electrical Measurements: Introduction, Concepts, and Applications”. Between 2007 and 2014 he was an effective member of task39 of the International Energy Agency, which focused on polymeric materials for solar thermal systems. MPG was co-chairman of the 2nd and 12th IEA-task39 international meetings.
In 2008, MPFG started as Principal Investigator (PI) and his research team comprises 26 post-doc project supervisions (financed by FCT, i3N, and UA), 11 Ph.D. students (5 already finished), and 5 research fellows in projects with industrial cooperation. MPFG completed the supervision of 31 final course project theses and 35 master dissertations. In international short-duration stage projects, MPFG was supervisor of 55 at UAveiro. MPFG has already participated as a jury in graduation degree, Master´s, Ph.D. essays, and Ph.D. degree defenses.
MPFG has a proactive attitude through research contracts with high-tech Portuguese industries. Since 2006 he was PI in 9 funded projects and a team-member in another 8. International collaboration has been one of MPFG's priorities. 34 international cooperation projects with institutions from Spain, France, Germany, Slovakia, Croatia, Marrocos, Tunisia, India, and Brazil were submitted, and MPFG was the coordinator in 8 and a member in other 17 funded projects. 3 projects are under evaluation.
He also collaborates in the physics engineering Ph.D. courses as a professor and coordinator of the "Micro and nano processing techniques" course, between 2010 and 2019 at Aveiro University. In 2019, he starts, as professor coordinator, of the course “Topics in Nanomedicine” for the Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering at UA. MPFG was also the coordinator of other 6 courses, one of them international.
In 2010 he was elected Member of UAveiro Physics Department Council. Between 2013 and 2016 he was a member of the Scientific Council of Aveiro University. In 2019, the list on which I participated to the university Scientific Council was the one with the most votes. He was also a member of the pedagogic council of ISLA - Instituto Superior de Leiria between 2010 and 2013.
Between 2010 and 2015, MPFG was the coordinator of two Master's degree courses and in 2022 he created, and coordinated, the international course entitled "Introduction to Nanomedicine", inserted in UAveiro's curricula as a “micro-credencial” (3 ECTS), which was financially promoted by BIP program of the ERASMUS+, for foreign master students, which occurred in the period between July and October. MPFG was also on the jury of several international human resources contests and on the jury of international contests for the purchase of scientific equipment.
