Career Trajectory
Bio
Full Professor, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Univ. Nova de Lisboa. Founder and earlier president and CEO, currently Vice President of IBET - Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (www.ibet.pt).
Positions
M. CARRONDO started his academic career at the Universidade do Porto, Portugal; from 1965 to 1971 where he studied chemical engineering. M. CARRONDO worked at Tuborg Brewery (Copenhagen) and Galp Oil Refinery (Porto) as chemical engineer and project designer at Plano (Lisboa). From 1975 to 1979 at Imperial College of Science and Technology, U. London, he obtained a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering. From 1980 he went from Assistant to Associate and to Full Professor (1992) after his Habilitation at Universidade Nova de Lisboa in biochemical engineering (1991). From 1985 onwards he created Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica - IBET (www.ibet.pt) as an interface to transfer to industry/economy the knowledge existing in some chemical/biological/chemical engineering departments in the three Lisbon Universities; currently IBET has collaborative projects with over fifty companies, of which 35 international (including Merck, Bayer and Abbott).
Research Activities
Originally, M. CARRONDO was involved in environmental engineering research of bacterial processes; from 1981 to 1990 he researched anaerobic biochemical engineering in particular acidogenic fermentation. From 1988, M. CARRONDO’s key areas of research became Animal Cell Technology and its application for human and animal health (http://tca.itqb.unl.pt). Therapeutic and diagnostic recombinant proteins, including fusion proteins; virus like particles and pseudo viruses as vaccination agents and viruses (retro-, adeno-, lenti-) as deliverables for gene therapy; cell therapies and stem cells have been pursed.
Technologically, cGMP pilot plant scale-up and production development of biopharmaceuticals was also a target as he created a cGMP start-up company from IBET, GenIBET Biopharmaceuticals (www.genibet.com) for production of biopharmaceuticals for Phase I/Phase II clinical trials. More recently he has been covering measurement and control tools to support hybrid modeling as part of “bottom up” systems biotechnology. Since 1978, M. CARRONDO published over 220 papers in internationally reviewed journals and had 29 PhD’s defending their thesis (4 ongoing).
