Bio
My research primarily involves digital design and manufacturing. I employ a variety of computational frameworks and representations to understand and aid engineering design and manufacturing, spanning upstream and downstream activities. My PhD research was about understanding creativity in early stages of conceptual design. Designers’ fragmented thoughts were categorized with Natural Language Processing and semantic similarity checking methods, and machine learning helped find patterns of creative ideation from problem formulation strategies. As a postdoc, I contributed to different projects: creating an ontology of design for additive manufacturing (AM) to support manufacturability analysis of design features; using voxel-based solid models to create subtractive manufacturing (SM) of assembly-free functional mechanisms; moving manufacturing left for design space exploration, i.e., adding manufacturing-induced form errors to as-designed CAD models to derive as-manufactured part models for more accurate simulations; using machine learning to distinguish capabilities of different manufacturing processes in realizing certain design shape, material, and quality from available manufactured parts data. My current work involves spatial division of 3D models for parallelized additive manufacturing of sub-volumes while considering benefits and limitations of the process such as weight reduction and build volume limitations respectively. My long-term research vision is to erase the line between Thinking and Making.
