Bio
Professor M.Z. Abdin was born in the village, Quadirabad, Dist. Sidhartha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, India in June 1963. After his primary education in Quadirabad, Professor Abdin moved to Utroula and Basti for college education. He graduated from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, U.P., India in 1985 in Botany and did Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from Indian Agricultural Research Institute (I.A.R.I.), New Delhi, India in 1991. In the last year of his Ph.D. program, Professor Abdin was selected for lectureship in the Department of Botany in Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, India, and joined this position in 1990. In 1997, he was appointed as Reader, and in 2005 as a Professor in the Department of Biotechnology in Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, India. He also took over as Vice-Chancellor of Singhania University, Rajasthan, India in the year 2008. However, due to his strong interest in Research, Professor Abdin returned back to his parent Department of Biotechnology. In addition to having many administrative positions in Jamia Hamdard including Dean, Faculty of Science, Member of Executive Council, and Jamia Hamdard Society, he is currently Head, Department of Biotechnology and member, Executive Council, Integral University, Lucknow, U.P., India. So far, he has guided 51 Ph.D. students as supervisors and 31 as Co-Supervisors in the area of Biotechnology. Professor Abdin has published more than 250 original research papers with the citation index of 11326: h-index:57, I10:208, I50:64, I100:19, and edited 06 books. Dr. Abdin has delivered 43 lectures in various institutions and at National/International conferences in India and more than 15 lectures at International conferences abroad. He has also visited several countries including the U.S.A., France, England, Germany, Japan, Australia, China, Saudi Arabia, and Iran to deliver lectures at International conferences.
Professor Abdin has developed the following products in his lab (Centre for Transgenic Plant Development):
> According to World Malaria Report, every year approximately 6,27,000 deaths are reported. World Health Organization has recommended Artemisinin (ART) based Combination therapies to treat malaria. ART is extracted from Artemisia annua L., it is the only source of commercial artemisinin, but the low yield of ART from the Artemisia annua plants (0.01-0.6%) causes a high cost of ACTs. We, thus in the Centre for Transgenic Plant Development developed a bioengineered Artemisia annua with more than 1% artemisinin content.
> For hundreds of years stevia has been known for its sweet characteristics and anti-diabetic properties. Stevia sweeteners have been on a quest to achieve the best possible taste profile because of the licorice like aftertaste. We, thus in our Centre developed a bioengineered Stevia rebaudiana with improved steviol glycosides contents (25% stevioside and 52% rebaudioside-A) and better palatability.
> We developed DNA and phytochemical fingerprints for quality control of raw materials used to prepare the drugs and also finished products of AYUSH. Some examples of single Unani drugs that were authenticated include Tukhm-e-kasoos (seeds of Cuscuta reflexa), Barg-e-sudab (leaves of Ruta graveolens), Kurkum (stigmas of Crocus sativus) etc. and compound Unani drugs including Habb-e-Mudir, Habb-e-Suranjan, Itrifal-e-Shahtra and Jawarish Kamuni etc.
> We cloned and validated functions of several miRNAs in Stevia rebaudiana, Artemisia annua and Brassica juncea, that are involved in regulating metabolic pathways linked to both primary and secondary processes leading to improved growth, yield and secondary metabolite production. We have also developed novel miRNA interference approach for inhibition of miRNA expression.
> Herbal Stevia Tea: A Healthy Sip (Stevia Tea Blend, Stevia Green Tea Blend and Stevia Pure) are also developed in the Centre.
> We have also optimized processes for production of Pharmacopeial AYUSH drugs such as Habb- e-Banafsha Qawi, Habb-e-Adrak, Habb-e-Huddar etc.
