Bio
During my PhD (2010-2014) I gained experience in molecular biology and pathology in an effort to understand the mechanisms of cancer progression based on cell stress responses. During my PhD my most significant contributions to the research field is my publication in J Pathol (Yamada M, Burke C, Colditz, P, Johnson DW, Gobe GC: Erythropoietin protects against apoptosis and increases expression of structural support tissue in the hypoxia-injured developing brain. J Pathol 2011, 224(1):101-109.). The impact factor of this journal is 6.318, one of the highest in the pathology and brain research specialist journals. This work demonstrated the neuroprotective benefit of treatment with rhEPO in hypoxia-injured neonatal brain, and indicates that clinical trials of the therapy could be considered for pre-term human neonates who experience hypoxic brain injury after birth. In February 2013 I joined Dermatology Research Centre, I have been supported by the unique research environment within the centre consisting of Prof. Soyer and Prof. Prow. Prof Soyer is a world renowned dermatologist who specialised in non-invasive imaging to detect and define skin cancers earlier to reduce skin cancer rates. Since then Prof Soyer has built a state of the art dermatology clinic equipped with the latest non-invasive imaging tools for clinical research and has established a core research team that has global collaborators in complementary disciplines. Prof. Prow, is a multidisciplinary researcher with internationally recognized expertise in the fields of micro-medical device development, nanodermatology and imaging. Dr Prow’s and Prof Soyer’s combined skill sets are ideally aligned for providing me with a unique research environment with a wealth of knowledge and expertise to draw from.
Although, I have changed the field of research, there have been opportunities to use my expertise in molecular biology and pathology to validate dermatological micro-device to be commercialised as this group is strongly focused on commercialisation of basic science. I have extensively involved in a Phase I clinical trial with a commercial entity which was recently completed successfully. The results from the Phase I study have been presented in various national and international conferences. One of the achievements is that the abstract has been published in Journal of Clinical Oncology, which has an impact factor of 18.4 (Dennis M Michael, Miko Yamada, Melinda Lowe, Casey Rowe, Dominic Wood, Kelly Byrnes-Blake, Tarl Prow, Lynda Spelman: Phase 1 dose escalation and expansion safety study of BLZ-100 in subjects with skin cancer. J of Cli Oncology 2015, 33(15)). Consequently, I managed another trial from the same entity. From these experiences, I have developed a strong translational focus with positive patient outcomes. I have already established several collaborations to strengthen my knowledge of skin biology and drug/peptide delivery. I was a key author in our joint publication with A/Prof. Benson at Curtin University, Perth where we looked at enhanced microneedle delivery of cosmeceutically relevant peptides in human skin (Yousuf et al., 2014, Plos One). In 2014, I have established and been conducting a collaborative project with Prof. Anton Middleburg and Dr Frank Sainsbury at Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology to develop a new transdermal drug delivery platform by using a nano-size emulsion (nanoemulsion). As a part of this nanoemulsion project, I have initiated collaboration with Prof. Evans at Harvard University to do the special imaging that they are highly focused on and we published the results in Journal of Controlled Release in 2018.
Since I have moved to University of South Australia in 2017, I have established the clinical networks including plastic surgeon, dermatologists, dermatopathologists and general practitioner. My role in Prow lab is to conduct pilot studies to validate our medical devices and drug delivery enhancement technologies.
