个人简介
Holding a professorship in Applied Cancer Research at the University of Zurich (Medical Faculty), being a staff member of the Dept. of Radiation Oncology, University Hospital Zurich, and with a PhD in Life Sciences from the ETH-Zurich (Federal Institute of Switzerland), my interdisciplinary research interests are situated at the interface of Basic and Applied Radiation Biology with a strong intersectoral relationship to pharmaceutical research.
My research program at the Laboratory of Applied Radiobiology, Dept. Radiation Oncology, University Hospital Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland, focuses on the identification of processes on the molecular, cellular and tumor pathophysiological level that regulate the response to radiotherapy and thereby co-determine treatment outcome. Novel anti-cancer agents targeting these molecular and cellular entities are identified and probed as part of combined treatment modalities with ionizing radiation - towards the translation of such novel treatment approaches into clinical concepts.
My research interests can be grouped into three major research areas with the overarching goals:
a) to identify novel targets for radiosensitization and to develop novel combined treatment modalities (ionizing radiation with chemo-/immunotherapy/antisignaling agents).
b) to understand differential treatment responses to different qualities of ionizing radiation.
c) to implement preclinical tumor models and radiotherapy approaches close to the clinical situation
As an indicator for our quality and scientific achievements, I continuously have received funding for our research projects from major funding agencies in Switzerland and abroad (Swiss National Foundation, Krebsforschung Schweiz, Horizon2020) and we could publish our results in very high ranking oncology and radiation oncology-oriented journals.
Based on my achievements and active research engagement on the European level I was also invited in 2019 to preside over a research consortium of eight leading European radiobiology research laboratories and to submit a Marie Curie ITN proposal on Applied Radiobiology. This Marie Curie ITN THERADNET has been granted in summer 2019 and now represents a major European research effort on Applied Radiation Biology in Europe (2019-2023) - with me as a network coordinator.
With my expertise in applied radiobiology, combined treatment modalities and the biological basis for personalized radiotherapy, I am also actively participating in teaching courses in the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) (Head of Research Course in Translational Radiation Biology and Oncology). At the international level I am also the co-organizer of the International Wolfsberg Meeting Series on Radiation Biology/Oncology.
Based on our previous success, I am looking forward to successfully pursuing our ongoing and future research projects and goals at the interface of Radiation Biology and Radiation Oncology.
