Bio
PhD in Chemistry (extraordinary doctorate award and international mention, UNED, 2017), Master of Chemical Science and Technology (UNED, 2012) and Bachelor of Engineering in Industrial Chemistry (major in Environmental Technology) from UPM (best academic record award and best first-year student award of B. Industrial Engineering from UPM, 2009).
After working a short period at industry as an engineer, Dr. Morales started her research career in 2012 through a couple of competitive fellowships from the Spanish Society of Catalysis (SECAT) at the department of Inorganic and Technical Chemistry in UNED, where she carried out her M. Chem. research project. In 2014 she pursued her PhD counting with an awarded competitive grant (FPI-UNED). Within that period, she was involved in the development of nanomaterials (nanostructured carbon materials, metallic nanoparticles) applied as heterogeneous catalysts for bioethanol valorization reactions (dehydrogenation and condensation). She carried out a three-month placement in 2015 at the University of Porto (Portugal).
Since she attained the doctoral degree in just three years (January 2017), UNED awarded her a special grant consisted of a postdoctoral one-year contract. Within that period, she performed a two-months postdoctoral stay in 2017 at the European Bioenergy Research Institute (EBRI, Birmingham, UK). In January 2018 she moved to CEMHTI-CNRS in Orléans (France) as a postdoctoral researcher in a project from the European Research Council (ERC), where she focused on the discipline of light-activated materials and set-up an experimental procedure to carry out selective photo-oxidation reactions. However, her health condition (a neuroinmune desease) significantly worsened and had to interrupt this postdoctoral training and to come back to Spain.
In September 2018, Dr. Morales joined the ICP-CSIC (Madrid) and continued developing her knowledge in the field of nanocatalysis, as well as in the chemistry of carbonaceous nanomaterials. In November 2019 she was awarded the "Juan de la Cierva-formación" fellowship (MICIU), through a general access competitive call, which later renounced in favor of a competitive Postdoctoral contract from UNED (September 2020-nowadays) to carry out a project focused on the study of catalytic hydrogenolysis or hydrodeoxygenation reactions of furan derivatives. She still carries out her research activities at ICP-CSIC.
The quality and relevance of her work is demonstrated by a record of 19 publications (January 2022) (9 as first author and 5 as corresponding author), 1 paper under review and 3 more in preparation (assuming the writing and the submission process in all of them). From her published record, 16 papers are Q1 and 11 are in the top 10% best journals of its category according to SJR (SCOPUS database). Up to now, the total citations number of her publication record is 197 and the h-index is 8. Additionally, her research work has been presented in 18 conferences (8 international, 9 oral and 4 as speaker), sharing the award for the best poster contribution on one occasion. Dr. Morales has participated in 10 research projects in total, funded through competitive calls of public entities; 1 ERC Consolidator grant, 6 national projects (1 as P.I.), 1 project from C. Madrid and 2 by UNED (1 as P.I.).
She has supervised 4 final bachelor’s degree projects (TFG) from B. Eng. Chem. and B. Sc. Chem. (since 2020), 1 traineeship from UCM (2019), 1 traineeship from SECAT (2021), 1 Master Chem. thesis (2017) and 1 Ph.D. thesis (2019-currently).
Dr. Morales has been always committed to teaching during her research career, including her PhD and postdoctoral training, as proved by the achievement of the Master Ed. Teaching of Secondary Education (2013) and the 382 hours of accredited lecturing as both laboratory and theoretical subjects belonging to the B. Chem., B. Environ. and M. Chem. & Tech. She is licensed by ANECA as Ayudante Doctora.
