Bio
María D. Mayán is the Head of CellCOM group at INIBIC. The long-term goal of her team is to translate basic research in age-related diseases and cancer into the clinic by identifying new therapeutic targets and biomarkers. She earned her bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from University of Santiago de Compostela-Spain in 2000 and her doctoral degree from Complutense University of Madrid- Spain in 2006 (CIB, CSIC). Trained as a postdoctoral fellow at Imperial College London and at the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences (LMS) since 2006 to 2010. In 2010 she moved to INIBIC. She received 2 scientific awards from the Spanish Society of Rheumatology. Since 2013, she has received continuous funding from ISCIII as well as from other funding agencies and private foundations and participated in different EU Calls. She is currently PI in a coordinated grant (FET-OPEN) from the Excellent Science pillar of H2020 and in a prestigious grant with industry participation in Galicia (Biotechnology tools 4.0, 2019-2022). Her group got a US patent approval (PTC) for the treatment of arthritis in 2014 and has registered four more EU patents since 2019. She is currently supervising 5 PhD students and 3 postdoctoral fellows. Dr. Mayán is a project evaluator for the National Agency for Evaluation and Prospective (ANEP), the KU Leuven (Belgium), Canada Foundation for Innovation, Research Council of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), the Arthritis Research UK and other public and private entities. She has organized more than 14 international conferences/workshops that have been funded by different entities such as SEBBM or The Company of Biologist Ltd. (UK). During this time, she has contributed to teaching activities (UDC) and actively participates in the organization of external seminars of INIBIC. Dr. Mayán is a member of different COST actions. The results of her group have been selected by pre-commercial development program of the Research Results of the Galician Public Health System (PRIS-Xunta de Galicia).
She was the founder and first coordinator of the Scientific Group "Chemical Biology" of the SEBBM and participates in the ASEICA-Woman space coordinated by Marisol Soengas from the Spanish Association of Cancer Research (ASEICA). Since 2019, she is at the Governing Bodies of SEBBM and the current coordinator of the Women in Science Group at SEBBM. She is co-chair of the next International Gap Junction Conference that will be held in 2022 in A Coruña. Her results in the oncology field has received the "Francisco Guitián Ojea” Technology Transfer Award from for the Galician Royal Academy of Sciences for a patent recently registered (PCT/ES2020/070269 April 27, 2020). She is actively involved in online scientific informative activities and in social media as well as in radio, TV and press.
