Bio
I have been always fascinated by sensory systems, in particular, the auditory system, because they are the gateway to perception and a logical starting point for exploring the basic mechanism of brain function. Thus, I pursued my graduate studies in the lab of Dr. Elgoyhen, a leader in inner ear research in Argentina and my postdoctoral training in Dr. Corfas´ lab at Harvard University, where I gained expertise in in vivo animal auditory physiology and molecular biology. I returned to Argentina in July 2011 as a research staff of the Comisión Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) at the Instituto de Farmacología, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). I established the first laboratory to perform auditory physiology in rodents in Argentina. Most of the equipment needed for my laboratory was purchased with grants provided by the PEW Latin American Fellows Program (USA), the National Organization for Hearing Research (NOHR-USA), ANPCyT (Argentina) and NIH 2 R01 DC001508-28. (PI: Paul A. Fuchs, Johns Hopkins, Co-PI A. Belen Elgoyhen, Collaborator: Maria E. Gomez-Casati and Juan Goutman).
My lab is currently focusing on trying to understand how normal inner ear function is affected by acoustic trauma and aging and the role(s) of the medial olivocochlear system (MOC) in protecting from exposure to loud noise. Our long-term goal is the identification of key processes to target in order to prevent inner ear damage produced by overly loud noise. Moreover, we plan to perform a screen of different compounds to find drugs that effectively prevent and treat noise-induced hearing loss. This knowledge could have a direct application to human health and might help to identify potential otoprotective compounds for the prevention and treatment of hearing deficits produced by acoustic trauma.
