M. Dias graduated in Chemical Engineering at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (FCT) of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) in 2003. In 2011 she completed the PhD degree in Materials Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon with a thesis entitled 'B-Fe-U phase diagram and ternary compounds characterisation. The work focused on the solidification and solid-state transformations as well as on structural and property characterisation of B-Fe-U intermetallic compounds. M. Dias had a Post-Doc position at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) investigating materials for nuclear applications in the Materials for fusion group affiliated with Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear (IPFN). Recently, Marta Dias (MD) won a junior research position at IST in agreement with DL57 since January of 2019 up to now. Three main different research lines have been followed: production and characterization of (i) W-Ta composites as plasma wall materials, (ii) WC-Cu and Cu-Y2O3 composites and (iii) CuxCrFeTiMo, CuxCrFeTiV and CrNbTaVW high entropy alloys, all as thermal barriers.
Investigations on the characterization of materials exposed to extreme conditions are particularly important to the lifetime of the nuclear fusion reactor. The study of the microstructures before and after plasma interactions using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as the study of deuterium retention in the composites using ion beam techniques were performed in the last years.
